Apple tree BOOKS REVIEW
Published in the late 1950s, these two charming novels are a time sheathing of working-course British civilisation just before the 1960s upended everything. Ada Harris is a 60-something widow who scrapes by as a cleaning woman for wealthy Londoners. In Paris, she sees a gorgeous Dior clothes in a client's wardrobe and becomes determined to own such a cute garment herself, while in New York, she searches for the birth begetter of a neglected foster boy. Both novels are crystal clear about the era's class divides, but Mrs. Harris' tin can-do spirit charms the starched collars off only near anybody she meets. Writer Paul Gallico'south supporting characters are equally lovable, especially Mrs. Harris' dour bestie, Mrs. Butterfield, whose weary pessimism is a perfect counter to our heroine'due south plucky determination. These smart, witty novels will delight readers of any age.
